Well that is according to the SomethingAwful crew Nerdcore is an 'awful minority' to them, one to ridicule and straight up accuse of being inadvertent racists to boot. Their list of minorities that they despise didn't stop there however, the included advocates of Linux, Firefox, Apple products, and several others as well.
I could say they are ignorant fucks, morons who peddle more venom than a snake charmer with a 2$ special on King Cobras, however that would be wasting too much time on them. The true humor in it all, besides the absolutely outstanding manifesto over at
Headphone Sacrament is that SA upgraded beyond just simple stupid to unbelievably hilarious morons when they went after Linux. Knowing just a smidgen about how the internet works, and that a large number of hosting providers offer Linux as a hosting platform I ran a
Netcraft search only to discover that every known subdomain of SA was run on.....wait for it...L I N U X!
No fancy quips, no catchy phrases illustrating the humor, just plain laughter that SA fail to get so much about the world around them, I hope the ill-gotten ad revenue is worth it!
Labels: funny, nerdcore, something awful
"SA is moronic, Netcraft confirms it!"
Thanks for the kind words about my humble little manifesto. It just kinda fell out.
And hey, your from Winchester! (I'm from central MD)
Matt from Headphone Sacrament
I think you are completely and horribly missing the point of Something Awful.
A little late aren't we?
Anyway I think I've got a good handle on what SA is all about and what it does, and I've heard enough stories about the fucked up things 'Goons' have done with pride to make someone else's life miserable. So am I still missing the point? The point of SA is to anger people and enable those doing the prodding to feel better about themselves, all the while making the owners of SA tons of money. They don't provide a service of sorts, since most of what they 'offer' is done better by many others.
The point is that Something Awful takes trolling to a whole level where they're both completely self-aware. So their ridicule of the "awful minorities" are both heartfeld criticisms, as well as self-deprecating satire. The SA forums have nerdcore fans and apparently nerdcore artists as well; the Former Fat Boys post there, I believe, and they've consented in letting some of their music be featured in the Flash Tub section on SA.
The thing is, they're not ignorant fucks who are blindly making fun of what they hate. There's a very strange love/hate symbiosis at work there. I have no doubt that many of the SA Goons, being computer nerds, use Linux and perhaps advocate the use. What SA does, I believe, is take popular nerd culture, such as nerdcore, and take the piss out of it. Nerdcore is an artform that's been getting a windmill of praise from publications such as Wired. So naturally SA, with their smarter-than-thou attitudes (or at least tone), decided to rag on nerdcore a bit. Do they really have such vitriol for the subgenre? I doubt it; the whole 'lulz' attitude is to troll to get laughs at all the self-serious artists who would unsuspectingly fall prey to their intentionally over-the-top critiques. That's certainly true of their music and game reviews. But do they really get pleasure out of making people feel bad, or showcasing the blindness people on the internet can have towards irony and satire? I would say a bit of both, incidentally.
As for the Goons' work into wrecking lives; it's a very fascinating record. Yes, they have massive amounts of venom. But they've taken trolling and internet hooliganism into a performance art form. And they do provide a service, that of cheap laughs. And frankly, that's what Matt Stone and Trey Parker do.
For the record, I am not affiliated with SA in any way. I read their articles from time to time, but that's it. I was intently curious as to what fallout they would have received from the nerdcore bit, however; I would have expected nerdcore fans to be more self-aware about who SA are and what they do. The Goons may be assholes, but they're closest the internet has to the Merry Pranksters and the Yes Men rolled into one. With a dose of the Symbionese Liberation Army thrown in for good measure.
So the point I think you're missing?? I think you're missing that Something Awful probably doesn't hate nerdcore, they're just doing this to provoke a rise out of people. As I said before, there is a segment of SA that is no doubt fans of nerdcore.
