Even though I am currently jobless I managed to finally pick up the latest Ultraklystron album Opensource Lyricist and have had it in the player for most of this weekend. Even though I hate to sound like a total suck up again its an album that I overall dig; if the beat doesn't grab me the lyrics usually end up entertaining me with references to things that I understand. Unlike a large portion of major recording artists UltraK actually improves with each release whereas others regress in quality and originality as they progress through albums. The tracks here are are layed out better than predecessors, lyrics and beat mesh up amazingly, and generally its an overall evolution in quality as the previous album was. One thing that I found interesting is the remixes (or would the term be remaster) of tracks featured on Romance Language and their refreshing twist on songs that I already have heard and become accustomed to hearing them sound a particular way.
In the realm of stand-out new tracks #5 Internet comes to mind with its distinctly ethnic synth tracks paired up with lyrics about life on the internet. Of all the songs on the album I connect with this one the best since I spend so much of my life behind the keyboard.
On priceless I am struck by the feeling that I've heard similar delivery and harmony in previous songs but I can't place it, almost like some old 50s tunes or perhaps some of the 80s pop, but even so the track is refreshingly different and definitely enjoyable.
In terms of just amazing rapping I have to acknowledge Full Disclosure and Coin Figure, both of which highlight the speed and accuracy that Ultraklystron has become known for, as fast as many mainstream rappers but how many of them can toss in words with more than two syllables?
I could probably sit down and come up with piles of accolades to pile up for each track, but honestly if you have heard any of the previous albums you should stop reading right now and go to his site and pick this one up because I can assure you that it will not disappoint you in the least. Even jobless I found it easy to justify spending the money to support not just nerdcore in general but a genuinely decent person who just happens to make amazing music, so get off your butt and get a copy already!
